A properly lubed chain increases efficiency, protects against contaminants, improves shifting, protects against corrosion, reduces wear, and makes riding more fun. Chain lube is also helpful in other applications on the bike such as derailleur pivots and shift/brake cables. Chain lubes are commonly categorized into three main types: wet lube, dry lube, or wax lube. Wet lubes go on wet and stay wet. Dry lubes go on wet and then partially or fully dry leaving a "dry" coating. Wax lubes are a special type of dry lube that use waxes together with or in place of oils. In many cases the type of lube aligns with riding conditions, wet lube for wet weather, but other factors like mileage, frequency of reapplication, or drivetrain cleanliness are important to consider as well.
While choosing the right chain lube can seem daunting, there are a few basics that can help guide you to the right lube for your ride. First and foremost, here at Pedro's we believe that chain lubes do not need toxic and harmful ingredients, and we don't use them in our lubes. Many other chain lubes do. Please read the labels and choose products safe for you and the environment.
Next you want to think about what conditions you want to ride in, how many miles you want to ride, how often you want to apply more chain lube, and whether you want a lube that keeps your chain especially clean. Our Quick Compare: Lubes tool, found at the top of this page and on each lube's product page, rates each of our lubes for these properties providing a side-by-side comparison. We also include a Lube-O-Meter on each product's label with similar guidance. Keep reading to learn more about each of the lube properties.
This indicates the riding conditions each lube is optimized for. The left end of the scale represents very dry, hot, dusty conditions and the right end of the scale represents wet, muddy, rainy conditions. Lubes that fall in-between work best in mixed conditions.
This indicates the expected longevity of each lube. Lower longevity lubes will need to be reapplied more often whereas higher longevity lubes will need less often. The scale shows relative longevity for each lube because different types of riding and the riding condition for each, can mean that exact mileage can vary significantly. The Lube-O-Meter on each lube label includes a dual ranking of miles and number of rides.
This indicates how clean the drivetrain will run using each lube. Wax lubes tend to run the cleanest while wet lubes tend run less clean. A lube running less clean does not necessarily indicate less performance. It primarily has to do with whether a lube is designed to block contaminants or dissolve/break down contaminants or somewhere in-between. The Lube-O-Meter on each lube label includes a ranking for "Dirt Mgt" which indicates how each lube handles contaminants.

Degreasers are high powered cleaners designed specifically to remove grease, oils, and grime. While many degreasers contain harsh and harmful chemical solvents, here at Pedro's we've developed advanced chemistry low-solvent and solvent-free degreasers that clean better and are safer for you and the environment.
Degreasers are used for cleaning chains, cassettes, cogs, chainrings, bearings, and other parts where grease or oil needs to be removed. Because degreasers are very powerful, they should be applied carefully to prevent accidental removal of grease or oil on other parts of the bike. Degreaser should never be left on a part for long periods of time and parts should always be rinsed off with water.
So why is degreasing important? Components are constantly exposed to the elements and while grease and lube do an impressive job, they eventually become saturated with contaminants. Performance suffers and wear protection drops. Degreasing removes the contaminated grease and lube so a fresh application can be applied to restore performance and protection.
We currently offer three degreasers:
A unique solvent/surfactant blend with low viscosity. Truly revolutionary when introduced in 1994 and still ahead of the curve today, Oranj Peelz is designed specifically for bicycle drivetrain degreasing, the powerful, biodegradable formula penetrates to reach every surface and quickly loosens and dissolves even the toughest drivetrain grime. The water-soluble formula rinses easily leaving surfaces residue-free.Learn more
An incredible solvent-free advanced-chemistry surfactant degreaser designed for use with water instead of chemical solvents. It is our highest performance and most versatile degreaser and is biodegradable, non-hazardous, non-flammable, zero V.O.C., plant-based, and safe to use on any material. With a higher viscosity and concentrated power, it can be applied very efficiently with almost no dripping/waste and less is needed. Degreaser 13 is also ideal for use in ultrasonic parts cleaners.Learn more
A low viscosity solvent-free advanced-chemistry surfactant degreaser featuring the same base chemistry found in Degreaser 13. It features less raw power but requires less rinsing and flows nicely into tight spaces. Pig Juice was formulated for use in the Chain Pig chain cleaner and works great for all other degreasing tasks as well. Pig Juice is biodegradable, non-hazardous, non-flammable, zero V.O.C., plant-based, safe to use on any material, fragrance-free and dye-free.Learn more
Better degreasing from the beginning
Since the beginning, Pedro’s degreasing technology has been ahead of the curve for safety, environment and most importantly performance.
Oranj Peelz, first offered in 1994, contains less than 30% solvent content; far less than our competitors even today who often rely on solvent content as high as 75-95% in their “citrus” degreasers (only 0.1-1% of which is actual citrus solvent). Aside from user safety and environmental issues, these high solvent degreasers leave residue on the drivetrain after use and require more cleaning. Oranj Peelz’s unique solvent/surfactant formula leaves parts residue-free and is more effective at removing the wide array of contaminants found on bike drivetrains.
Additionally, the high-solvent degreasers are more prone to damaging plastic parts, paint, and the advanced chain coatings found on some high end chains. Shimano and Campagnolo even went so far as condemning use of all “citrus” degreasers on these chains. Though we disagreed with these suggestions based on Oranj Peelz's lower solvent content, we were glad to have already started work on our next generation degreasing chemistry. Oranj Peelz’s secret sauce has always been its non-solvent ingredients and further developing this chemistry technology resulted in our first fully solvent-free degreaser chemistry used in Pig Juice and Degreaser 13. We’re proud to say, they are the best degreasers we’ve ever used, and can be safely used on any material.
All the advantages of Oranj Peelz carried through to our new degreasers, and performance is even better, without any of the negatives of solvents. In all side by side tests we completed, we found Degreaser 13 to outperform or match Oranj Peelz. Pig Juice has less raw power than Degreaser 13 and Oranj Peelz but is still impressively effective and is not far behind in most uses.
Bike wash is a medium strength cleaner specifically designed to remove dirt, mud, and grime from all parts of the bike. So what makes it different than a degreaser or something like dish detergent? An important distinction from degreasers and dish detergent is that bike wash won't remove oil or grease. This means it is perfectly safe to spray and apply it all over the entire bike and not worry about accidentally removing grease or oil. In addition, for light cleaning, Green Fizz bike wash can be used without additional water or rinsing. Just spray and wipe.
So why is washing your bike important? Keeping your bike clean will make your bike last longer, make repairs easier, make your mechanic happy, help reveal hidden safety issues, improve performance, save weight, and save money.

Frequency and basic techniques for cleaning and lubing you bike
Every Ride: Focus on your chain
Before each ride, check your chain and apply lube if chain is dry or does not move freely.
- Choose a lubricant that matches riding conditions and performance preferences.
- Position the bike in a stable way that allows access to the chain and allows the drivetrain to be backpedaled.
- Hold the bottle just above the chain and apply lube to the chain rollers while backpedaling the drivetrain 1-2 full cycles.
- Stop applying lube, then continue backpedaling for 2-3 full cycles of the chain, and let sit for 5-10 minutes to let lubricant set up.
- Finally, wrap a clean rag around the lower portion of the chain and backpedal to remove any excess lubricant from the outer surfaces to prevent contamination.
- Not sure if your chain needs lube? There are a few ways to quickly check. First, lightly tap the lower section of chain with your finger. If it rattles or sounds loose, it needs lube. Second, grab one your chain's rollers between your fingers and see if you can spin it. If the roller is totally frozen or tough to spin, the chain needs lube, or it might be time to degrease.
- Notice your drivetrain is extra noisy or not shifting well on your last ride? This could be caused by multiple things but a great place to start is to add lube to see if things improve. If you chain is already covered in lube (over-lubed) try degreasing and then adding fresh lube before making adjustments.
Every 1-2 Weeks: Bath Time
After a few weeks of riding it's time to give your bike a bath. Our Green Fizz bike wash is safe to apply to the entire bike, compatible with all materials, and won't remove lube or grease.
- Rinse the bike with light to medium pressure to wet surfaces and remove any large chunks of dirt.
- Spray bike wash on the whole bike and let sit briefly before rinsing with water.
- Wipe dry with a clean rag.
- For dirtier bikes, pour about 4oz of bike wash into a bucket with a gallon of water and use brushes to dip and scrub the whole bike before rinsing with water and drying.
- Green Fizz 16X Concentrate is an incredible value and allows you to boost strength for tough jobs or dilute further for even more economy.
- Want your rig to look brand-new? Finish bath time with an application of Bike Lust polish for extra shine and to make future cleaning easier.
- Check your chain. Green Fizz won't remove lube from your chain but after bath time, once your bike is dry, is a good time to check you chain.
- Primarily a fair-weather rider with only a lightly dirty bike? Skip the bike wash and use Bike Lust polish instead.
Every 2-4 Weeks: Full Spa Treatment
After weeks of riding and thousands of pedal strokes your bike needs some extra love. In addition to the full bike washing described above, now is a good time to refresh your drivetrain with a full degreasing.
- Apply degreaser to the cassette and chainrings using the Toothbrush drivetrain cleaning brush. We like to pour a little degreaser onto the brush first and then quickly scrub onto the part. Let that sit.
- Meanwhile, install your Chain Pig hands-free chain cleaner, add an ounce of degreaser, and give the chain a good cleaning. Rinse the Chain Pig out, run it again filled with clean water, and then remove from the chain.
- Next, add a little water to the Toothbrush bristles and quickly scrub at the cassette and chainrings to further activate the degreaser and scrub off all the loosened grime. Don't forget your derailleur pulleys. The stiff tail bristles on the Toothbrush are perfect for those.
- Finally, give everything a rinse with water and dry with rag. Results are incredible! Don't forget to apply lube before you next ride. This can be done as soon as the chain is dry.
- If not using the Chain Pig, apply degreaser to the chain as well and go straight to scrubbing all the parts.
- Pig Juice was designed specifically for use in the Chain Pig but our other degreasers work great too. Dilute Degreaser 13 with 2 parts water or do some extra rinsing cycles with water.
- Get degreaser somewhere you don't want it, just rinse well with water. All our degreasers are water soluble.
- Want to dry your chain quickly? First quickly backpedal the drivetrain in spurts to fling water out of the chain and off the cassette. Second, take a clean rag and wipe just the chain's rollers on just one side while backpedaling the drivetrain. This will spin the rollers and help push out water.
