Pulling inspiration from our professional wrenches, the Apprentice Pedal Wrench makes quick work of tough pedals featuring a long 300mm length, cushioned plastic grip for control and comfort, heat-treated tool steel construction for strength and lasting performance, and a precision cut 15mm wrench opening positioned at a 30 degree offset to improve mechanical advantage and wrench positioning. The smaller, lightweight design is also perfect for travel and easy to fit in the toolbox.



How to Check Chain Wear:
    1. Position the Chain Checker just above the chain and hold in place with one hand.
    2. Use your free hand to push the chain up onto the Chain Checker at position 1 so that a roller is cupped by the curved protrusion. Hold in place with left hand.
    3. Use your right hand to push the chain firmly onto the Chain Checker at position 2 to create tension in the chain between the rollers at positions 1 and 2. Continue applying pressure on the chain upward at position 2 and release your hand from position 1.
    4. Finally, while keeping pressure at position 2, push the chain onto the Chain Checker at position 3. The Chain Checker II provides two levels of wear indication: If the chain is worn between than 0.5% and 0.75%, the protrusion at position 3 will go half-way through the chain. If the chain is worn more than 0.75%, the protrusion at position 3 will go fully through the chain past the roller. If you cannot push the protrusion through the chain at position 3 at all, then the chain is worn less than 0.5%.
Pedro’s and most chain manufacturers recommend replacement at 0.75% wear, while some manufacturers suggest replacement at 0.5% wear. The Chain Checker Plus II provides indication at these two levels to allow you to decide when best to replace your chain.


How to Use Chain Hook:
    1. Position Chain Checker above the chain with the two matching hooks facing downward.
    2. First hook one of the two hooks around a roller on the chain.
    3. Next locate a roller 5-8 rollers away from the first one and pull it onto the second hook. This will create a slack section of links. See image below.


We do not offer a specific presta core removal tool. However, the following multi-tool chain tools work great for this task. The slot behind the anvil of these chain tools is the perfect size for presta valve core removal. See images below.

The Vise Whip will work on cogs intended for 3/32″ internal width chains but not ones for 1/8″ of larger.

Degreaser 13 and Pig Juice share a similar solvent-free base chemistry but differ mainly in power, viscosity, and price.

Degreaser 13 is more powerful and concentrated which leads to a higher viscosity and cost/bottle. The high viscosity makes it really fantastic for applying to drivetrain components because it doesn’t drip off and is very efficient. It is further activated by water and also requires a bit more rinsing than Pig Juice because of the high concentration.

Pig Juice feature a little less raw power but is pre-activated to make sure it flows nicely into tight spaces like chains and also to require less rinsing. Pig Juice was designed for optimal performance in the Chain Pig chain cleaner when used straight out of the bottle. It also works great for other degreasing tasks as well.

Our preferred application is to use Degreaser 13 and Pig Juice together for cleaning drivetrains. Apply Degreaser 13 to the cassette and chainrings using the Toothbrush. Then run Pig Juice in the Chain Pig on the chain, rinse the Chain Pig out, and run a again filled with water. Next add a little water to the Toothbrush bristles and quickly scrub at the cassette and chainrings to further activate the Degreaser 13. Finally give everything a rinse with water and dry with rag. Results are pretty incredible!

Before using your pump, identify the valve type.  The typical valve types are:

Presta Valve: This valve is found on many road bikes and high end bikes. It has a much narrower diameter and is generally taller than a Schrader Valve. A Presta Valve requires a small nut to be loosened. Described further below.

Schrader Valve: This is the same type found on most car tires. It is generally shorter and has a larger diameter than a Presta Valve.


Using the Pump:

1. Remove any plastic caps from the valve. For Presta Valve, make sure to unscrew the small nut at the top of the valve as shown.


2. Check the pump head and make sure the lever is centered between the two sides of the head as shown.

3. Attach head to valve:

a. For Schrader, use the black side of the head.
b. Push the head of the pump onto the valve using moderate force. If there is air in the tube the head may start releasing some air.
c. While pushing the head onto the valve, move the locking lever on the head away from the valve. The small white arrow should point at the valve.

Schrader Use

a. For Presta, use the grayside of the head. Double check that the small nut has been unscrewed and the pin can be depressed. If there is air in the tube, pressing the pin down will release air. The pin will also be pushed back up when you remove your finger.
b. Push the head of the pump onto the valve using moderate force until you reach a point where it cannot be pushed any further. If there is air in the tube the head may start releasing some air.
c. Move the locking lever on the head away from the valve. The small white arrow should point at the valve.

Presta Use

4. Pump to desired pressure.

5. To remove head from the valve, return lever to center position and carefully pull head straight off the valve.

6. For Presta Valve, after removing pump head, make sure to close the valve by turning the nut clockwise until snug.

7. Replace any plastic caps that were removed.


The Quick Link Pliers are compatible with most 5-11 speed derailleur chains with master links that use two plates like shown below.  They will also work on SRAM® Eagle 12 speed chains with Eagle™ PowerLock® chain connector.  Some single-speed chains use a different style of quick master link which cannot be removed using the Quick Link Pliers.

There are two main differences.  The first is that Slick Wax uses an alcohol carrier to deliver the wax lubricant package to the chain surfaces versus Ice Wax 2.0’s water-based carrier.  In both cases, the carrier evaporates leaving the wax lubricant on the chain surfaces.  As you can imagine, the alcohol carrier in Slick Wax evaporates much more quickly.  You can apply Slick Wax right before a ride and it will be ready to give top performance.  With Ice Wax, the water takes more time to evaporate so we recommend applying it at least one hour or more before you ride to get the best performance.  The second difference is in the wax lubricant package.  Both use only natural waxes but the types of wax are different.  The package in Slick Wax is a bit more advanced, leveraging multiple types of wax for specific purposes along with some new polymer technology.  This allows it to run incredibly clean in super dusty conditions while also providing incredible drivetrain efficiency (hence the “Slick” name).

Pedro’s currently offers three degreasers: Oranj Peelz, Degreaser 13, and Pig Juice. All three are generally interchangeable and intended for degreasing tasks, such as degreasing chains, drivetrain parts, bearings, or other parts where grease or oil needs to be removed. As a side note, the ability to remove oil and grease effectively is the difference between a degreaser and and bike wash (Green Fizz). Green Fizz effectively removes dirt, grime, mud, etc but won’t remove oil or grease which allows it to be safely used all over the bike.

Pedro’s Degreasers – Overview
Since the beginning, Pedro’s degreasing technology has been ahead of the curve for safety, environment and most importantly performance. Oranj Peelz, first offered in 1994, contains less than 30% solvent content; far less than our competitors even today who often rely on solvent content as high as 75-95% in their “citrus” degreasers (only 0.1-1% actual citrus solvent in a competitor’s citrus degreaser). Aside from user safety and environmental issues, these high solvent degreasers leave residue on the drivetrain after use and require more cleaning. Oranj Peelz’s unique solvent/surfactant formula leaves parts residue-free and is more effective removing the wide array of contaminants found on bike drivetrains when compared to these high solvent degreasers. Additionally, the high-solvent degreasers are more prone to damaging plastic parts, paint, and recently the advanced chain coatings found on high end chains. Shimano and Campagnolo even went so far as condemning use of all “citrus” degreasers on these chains. Though we disagreed with these suggestions based on Oranj Peelz’s lower solvent content, we were glad to have already started on our next generation chemistry. Oranj Peelz’s secret sauce has always been its non-solvent ingredients and further developing this chemistry technology resulted in our first fully solvent-free degreaser chemistry used in Pig Juice and Degreaser 13. We’re proud to say, they are the best degreasers we’ve ever used, and can be safely used on any material. All the advantages of Oranj Peelz carried through to our new degreasers, and performance is even better, without any of the negatives of solvents. In all side by side tests we completed, we found Degreaser 13 to outperform or match Oranj Peelz. Pig Juice has less raw power than Degreaser 13 and Oranj Peelz but is still impressively effective and is not far behind in most uses. The other significant difference of Degreaser 13 compared to Oranj Peelz or Pig Juice is the high viscosity. Degreaser 13 can be very efficiently applied with almost no dripping/waste and the concentrated power allows less to be used.

Degreaser 13 and Pig Juice share a similar solvent-free base chemistry but differ in power, viscosity, and price. Both are biodegradable, non-hazardous, non-flammable, zero V.O.C., plant-based, and safe to use on any material. The chemistry technology behind both is engineered to fight its way to metal surfaces, then attack and break free the bonds holding oils, soils, and grime in place, and finally dissolve and contain to carry it all away. Both are designed to work in conjunction with water which acts as the “solvent”.

Degreaser 13 is more powerful and concentrated with a higher viscosity and price point. The extra power tackles the toughest degreasing jobs and the concentrated formula is perfect for the mechanic that likes to play with dilution to match the job at hand. Used straight from the bottle, the high viscosity is perfect for applying to drivetrain components because it doesn’t drip off and is very efficient. It is further activated by water and also requires a bit more rinsing than Pig Juice because of the high concentration. To get the best performance from your chain lubricant, it is important to choose one that matches your riding conditions. Pedro’s offers a lubricant for all types of conditions from dry desert riding to the mud and snow of a New England cross race.  Each bottle of Pedro’s chain lubricant offers a “Lube-O-Meter” with easy to understand icons to help you choose the correct lubricant. These can also be found on each product page.  The following provides a general overview for our four lubricants:





Properly applying lubricant will ensure you get the best performance possible. Check out our Guide: How to Lube Your Chain to learn the proper technique.

Vegetable oils provide many advantages over petroleum and straight synthetic lubricants. To learn more, check out our write-up Why Use Vegetable Oil-based Lubes?.

Clearly it is important for a chain lube to perform well and be long lasting.  So why would you want it to biodegrade?  Take a look at the write-up Should Chain Lube Biodegrade? to get a quick look at how biodegradation works and reasons why choosing biodegradable chain lube might be a better for your bike, for you, and for the planet.

Chainj is pronounced just like change. Saying Chainj as Chain-Jay is incorrect, but we’ll still like you even if you call it that!

The closest replacement to Road Rage would be our Go! lubricant. This is a low viscosity lubricant with exceptional penetration and lubrication properties and should work well in your Mavic hub. Another option is Chainj which is very similar to Go! but has a higher viscosity.

We’ve seen a number of cases where Ice Wax 2.0 has thickened in the bottle. This is not the intended state of Ice Wax and we implemented a fix in mid-2013. However, some unfixed bottle may still be out in the market.  If you believe you have one of these bad bottles, please submit a warranty claim and we will replace your lube at no cost.  That said, if you don’t mind a little tinkering, a quick  fix is to add isopropyl alcohol (70%) to the Ice Wax 2.0 to help thin out the lube.  It only takes a small amount to achieve this.  We suggest 0.5fl-oz be added to for 3.5 fl-oz of lube. Simply add the isopropyl and shake the bottle vigorously for about a minute.   This will lower the viscosity and allow the lube to be applied normally.

Keeping your bike clean is an essential part of bicycle maintenance ensuring better performance, increased safety, easier repairs, increased life of all parts of the bike, and more fun on your next ride! Read on to learn more about these two important types of cleaners.
Bike Wash: Used for general purpose cleaning of the entire bike.  Bike wash is designed to remove dirt, dust, mud, road salt, and other general grime.  However, bike wash will not remove oils or grease (see degreaser).  This makes bike wash safe to use anywhere on the bike without risk of accidentally washing away important grease.  Using bike wash frequently will make each cleaning easier and your bike looking like new.  Pedro’s bike wash is called Green Fizz.  Bike Wash can also be used to clean drivetrain parts, but as mentioned above, will not be effective as a degreaser to remove oils.  That said, if you don’t plan to use a degreaser, bike wash will be better than nothing.

Degreaser: Used for heavy-duty cleaning of drivetrain parts (gears and chain).  Degreasers are designed to be very powerful allowing them to remove grease, oils, and tough grime.  Many degreasers achieve their cleaning power with solvents.  Many different types of solvent ingredients are used from naturally derived citrus solvents to other common solvents such as mineral spirits.   Because of the solvents, most degreasers are considering hazardous and require care to make sure they are used only on metal parts and not plastic, paint, or rubber.  Pedro’s had always used as little solvent as possible in its degreasers.  Our Oranj Peelz degreaser was developed more than 20 years ago and contains less than 30% solvent content; far less than our competitors even today.  Oranj Peelz’s secret sauce is actually in its non-solvent ingredients and we’ve recently used this knowledge to develop our first fully solvent-free degreasers: Degreaser 13 and Pig Juice.   We’re proud to say, they are the best degreasers we’ve ever used, and can be safely used on any material.  That said, because of their cleaning power, they can still potentially remove grease and oil that you might want to keep, so care should be used when applying to your bike.

Oranj Peelz and Pro J are designed for drivetrains specifically. However, they can be used on other portions of the bike for stubborn grease and grime, but need to be rinsed well with water within 5-10 minutes of application to prevent damage. Pedro’s recently introduced two new solvent-free degreasers, Degreaser 13 and Pig Juice, which can safely be used on any material or finish and are better choice of degreasers for use on non-drivetrain parts.  Green Fizz bike wash is also a great option for risk-free cleaning on any material.  If Pro J or Oranj Peelz or Pro J comes into contact with non-drivetrain parts unintentionally, rinse well with water as soon as possible.

Bike Lust can be used on all types of materials and finishes including carbon fiber and matte finishes. It’s also fantastic on tires to help shed mud and dirt as you ride. As always, be careful when using Bike Lust around braking surfaces but other than that you should be all set!

Bio Grease is not recommended for bearing applications. It should be used for assembly tasks, great for threads, ensuring accurate torque and protecting against corrosion, and great for component interfaces, ensuring easy adjustment and removal and again preventing corrosion. For bearing applications, we recommend our new Syn Grease Plus (available mid 2013) which meets tough GC-LB requirements, the highest rating for bearing performance classification. This rating means Syn Grease Plus will provide the absolute highest performance and protection for your most critical bearing applications.

If surrounded with a rectangle, the Trixie is approximately 187mm long, 33mm wide, and 5mm thick. This width measurement is taken at the widest relative points at the lockring wrench end however and the width is generally much less.

All the tool bits found on the Tülio have been designed to withstand the most aggressive riding and were tested extensively on everything from professional road race stages to technical downhill trails. Scott Thigpen, an ultra-endurance mountain bike racer, seems to agree in his review. If you do ever manage to lose a bit, we’ll happily replace it free of charge.

We have spare hoses and heads for our current pump versions which were introduced in 2010. For old versions of Pedro’s pumps, we no longer carry spare parts. However, the new spare hoses and heads can be retrofitted onto older pumps.   The retrofit involves removing a fitting from the base end of you old hose and installing it into the new hose.  See image below of fitting from older Domestique and Prestige pumps.  Please contact us if you are unsure of which version of pump you have.

Though many mechanics will claim they can torque a bolt by feel, there are simply too many variables involved for that to be true. We recently answered some questions for pinkbike.com about torque specifications and torque wrenches to shed some light on why the torque wrench is an essential tool for any mechanic.

We strongly recommend wrench owners work with a professional calibration service to ensure the proper equipment and techniques are employed. We have had good luck with ESSCO Lab located in Massachusetts but any similar calibration service should be able to provide calibration.

The Pro Chain Tool 2.0 is compatible with single speed through 10 speed chains. The only limitation might be with very wide or thick single speed chains sometimes used on BMX bikes.

Nearly every chain tool we offer can be used on 11 speed chains.  The one exception is the chain tool on the ICM Multi-Tool which will work on single-speed through 10 speed chains.

When used properly, the Vise Whip does not cause any damage to the cassette. Despite the use of the same mechanism found in vise grip pliers, the Vise Whip differs in its function and does not need to clamp down on the cog to work properly. Most people adjust the Vise Whip so that it just barely clamps to the size of the cog. However, even adjusting so the Vise Whip is a little loose when clamped will work as well.

The increase in Torx style hardware is likely based on the advantages Torx style hardware provide over hex style. The Torx design was introduced in the 1960s as a replacement to Phillips or slot style screws/driver combinations. Where the Phillips/Slot style screws were designed to prevent over tightening allowing the tool to slip beyond a specific torque, the Torx was designed to prevent slipping and reduce damage to the tool. In terms of usage on bicycles, the Torx style fastener was slow to be adapted due to the higher cost when compared to hex style hardware. As cost has come down, many designers have started to switch to Torx because of a few key advantages. First, by design, Torx are less likely to strip out when compared to a hex because of the way the load is distributed and applied between the tool and the hardware. Second, due to the this improved load handling, the height of the screw head can be reduced. This provides flexibility to product designers who are always looking for more space. This is largely the reason that the Torx bolt was first seen on bicycles in disc brake applications where a low profile was important. An added bonus, the shorter head also offers slight reduction in mass which is also helpful in bicycle applications where vehicle mass is so critical to performance.

The Cog wrench will work on any cassette that has an 11 tooth or 12 tooth cog for the high gear. These are the most common sizes but some cassettes use a 13 tooth high gear and more recently a few 10 tooth high gear cassettes have been introduced. The Cog Wrench will not work for these cassettes. Please check out the Vise Whip for these cassettes.

The Pedro’s BB Socket Holder is designed to work with the follow bottom bracket spindles:

-Bottom brackets which have an M8 internal spindle thread.  Most square taper bottom brackets have this size internal thread.

-Bottom brackets which have an M15 internal thread.  This includes the more common ISIS Standard bottom brackets with M15 spindle thread and any other spindle with M15 internal thread.

The new BB Socket Holder II, introduced Spring 2018, will fit the above bottom bracket spindles and adds the following:

-Bottom brackets which have an M12 internal thread.  This includes less common ISIS Standard bottom brackets with M12 spindle thread and any other spindle with M12 internal thread.

The ICM is approximately 3.4″ long, 2″ wide, and 1″ thick (measured at the thickest part).

Overall, with the L Wrench in place, the 6-Pack Chain Tool is approximately 2.75″ tall, 1.7″ wide, and 0.5″ thick.

The Portable Work Bench features a strong and stable steel frame.  Total weight is approximately 30 pounds.

The Chain Keeper was not designed to work with 142×12. However, we have tested it on an Ibis Mojo HDR, which uses a 142×12 rear axle setup (Maxle standard), and found that the Chain Keeper will works if installed backwards (QR lever inside the frame).  This requires that the skewer be partially dissembled so the axle can be passed through the dropout but works quite well considering it wasn’t designed specifically for use in a 12×142 dropout.  We also found it easier to pull the chain onto the Chain Keeper after the Chain Keeper is installed (instead of during installation).  Check out the photos below.

The outer dimensions for the Master Tool Case are L19.8” x W16.0” x H7.6”.  The portion of the bottom half of the case not populated by pallets, provides approximately L17″ x W12″ x H4″ of empty foam-lined space.  The weight is 13lbs-2oz.

Grease Injectors can be a little finicky and most problems users have can be attributed to air pockets. We suggest the following techniques:
1. Before attaching the grease tube to the injector, make sure grease is present at the tip of the tube or even starting to come out of the tube.
2. Screw the grease injector onto the grease tube.
3. Next, squeeze the grease tube from the bottom (like a toothpaste tube) to push grease from the tube into the injector. The idea is to replace all air in the injector with grease.
4. As you are pushing grease from the tube into the injector, squeeze the trigger of the injector to determine if the grease has moved into the injector. The injector will become harder to squeeze once it is moving grease.
5. Once grease is in the injector, squeeze the trigger slowly until grease starts coming out of the trigger tip. Pause between each squeeze of the trigger to allow the grease to move. Since grease is very thick, it takes time to move after air pressure is applied. If you squeeze the trigger many times in a row very quickly, it builds up pressure and leads to an uncontrolled stream of grease (makes a mess) and may create air pockets which will disrupt the flow of grease requiring you to start back at step 2.
6. Once grease has fully filled the space within the injector, you should have consistent performance. After extended use, some air pockets may occur as the tube empties. If this happens repeat these steps again to refill the injector and remove air pockets.

Pedro’s Cable Cutter is designed for cutting steel cables (wire rope) up to 4mm in diameter.

Chains wear out over time and become elongated.  This can lead to poor performance and even damage other parts.  Though many refer to this wear as chain stretch, none of the parts are actually being stretched over time.  Instead, chain wear is solely based on an increase in pin to pin distance.  This is caused only by wear to the chain pins and mating holes on the inner links.  Normal wear that may occur to the chain rollers does not contribute to overall chain wear, but in order to accurately measure the increase in pin to pin distance, the play in the rollers must be accounted for.  The three point measurement system used on the Chain Checker Plus accomplishes this by pushing both rollers in the same direction during measurement, instead of in opposite directions, as is the case with common two-point measurement tools.  As a result, the Chain Checker Plus achieves a true measure of the pin to pin distance.

The Chain Pig can be used on single-speed setups but may require some modified setup and usage techniques based on the lack of derailleur, chain position relative to the frame, and chain dimensions.

For the derailleur hook and chain position, you may be able to hook the derailleur hook around the axle next to the rear cog.  When trying this, make sure the Chain Pig body isn’t contacting the frame and being pushed out of alignment.  Alternatively, the best solution is to remove the derailleur hook and hold the Chain Pig in place with your hand.

The next consideration is the size of your chain.  Since single speed chains tend to be wider than multi-speed chains, you may find the Chain Pig runs with some extra resistance.  The openings on Chain Pig body are 10mm wide and should allow most chains to pass through.  The sponge may also have some issue with wider chains but can easily be removed if needed.
